If you take out a mortgage then the mortgage lender will insist the property is insured.  It is sensible to have insurance anyway.

 

Depending on the type of property you have then you will need to take out buildings insurance and if you want to insure the contents then you can either take a separate contents policy or combine it with the buildings insurance.
